Galactica is a computer program that can write scientific texts using artificial intelligence. It was created by Meta, a company owned by Facebook. Galactica was trained on millions of scientific documents from different sources, such as articles, websites, textbooks and encyclopedias. Galactica can perform various tasks related to science, such as summarizing papers, solving math problems, generating wiki articles, writing code, and annotating molecules and proteins. However, Galactica is not a reliable source of scientific information. It does not understand the meaning or the truth of what it writes. It only copies and combines words and phrases from its training data. This can lead to many errors and biases in its outputs. For example, Galactica can make up fake papers and authors, write nonsense or inaccurate facts, and reproduce prejudice and stereotypes. Many scientists have criticized Galactica for being unethical and dangerous .Galactica was launched as a public demo on November 15, 2022, but it was taken down after three days of negative feedback from the scientific community . Meta said that it appreciated the feedback and that it paused the demo for now. Galactica is still available for researchers who want to learn more about the work and reproduce the results in the paper.
